Jobs at The Fernseed

Interested in working at Fernseed? We'd love to hear from you. We're an independent, locally-owned business—started as a plant shop in Tacoma, Wash. in 2019, expanded to floral with a focus on local sourcing in 2020, and opening a second location in Centralia, Wash. (in the old Pioneer West building) in 2026, where we're expanding again to include a garden center.

As an employer, Fernseed's goal is to offer the people on our team autonomy, flexibility, creativity, and opportunity. You want to grow here? Great! Our entire management team is made up of people who started as retail associates. You're content to simply cultivate a sense of community by helping customers pick out the right plant? Amazing! Keep showing up to your scheduled shifts and we can do that for 5 more years. The only thing we ask is that everyone wear close-toed shoes——for safety. 🥾

Hiring Questions

Questions about applying to work at Fernseed. If you don't see your answer here, email jobs@thefernseed.com.

How do I apply?

The best—and really only—way to apply is to fill out the job application form on our website. A resume is welcome but optional, and most questions on the form are optional too.

Can I apply for more than one role?

Yes — fill out the form for each role that interests you, and note it in the "anything else" field.

What happens after I apply?

We review applications on a rolling basis and reach out directly by email to schedule interviews. Due to the volume of interest in these roles and our current timeline, we cannot reply to everyone who applied—if we are interested in scheduling an interview with you, we will reach out, likely within 2-4 weeks of your application submission.

If I have applied to the general interest form, but not one of these specific job role applications, should I apply again?

Yes, absolutely! Our general interest form helps us collect information from people who might like to work for us when we are not actively hiring, but active job roles are always the best—and most immediate—way to apply.

Do you use AI in your hiring process?

No. A real human scans through every application and reads every answer.

I made a mistake on the form, or wanted to include something I forgot, or hit "submit" too early, or really, really wanted to attach a file and there was no space to do that.

Email jobs@thefernseed.com with your name and the role you applied for, and we'll connect it to your application. No need to resubmit the whole form.

Do you have to be 18 to work at Fernseed?

Yes, for the time being. Our standard shift schedule doesn't align with the legal working hours for minors during the school year, so all roles currently require applicants to be 18 or older.

Do I need plant or floral experience?

As weird as it may seem, plant, gardening, and/or floral experience has never been a hard requirement for our job roles. We are more interested in your overall work experience, "soft" skills like collaborating on small teams, reliability, flexibility, and initiative.

What benefits do you offer?

PTO accrues from day one for all employees, and everyone gets a generous staff discount (up to 50%). Salaried managers receive a monthly tax-free health care coverage reimbursement (ICHRA).

Do the jobs have physical requirements?

We don't list physical requirements on our postings, and we don't want anyone to rule themselves out because of a disability. We staff as a team — our locations need the right mix of abilities across the whole crew, not every ability in every person. If you have questions about accommodations at any stage, including the application itself, email jobs@thefernseed.com or ask during the interview process.
