Freelance Class & Workshop Instructor
We’re looking for a creative, self-directed instructor to lead and grow our class program. This is a flexible, project-based independent contractor role perfect for someone who’s equal parts maker, host, and marketer.
About Fernseed
Fernseed is a modern plant and flower shop specializing in locally sourced flowers, botanical design, and creative workshops. Our classes—from floral design and wreath making to terrariums and botanical crafts—connect people with nature and each other.
What You’ll Do
-
Plan & teach classes: Continue our most popular workshops (e.g., floral design, wreaths) and create new offerings that fit the Fernseed brand. All classes and workshops are held in the Fernseed studio space, adjacent to our retail storefront on South Tacoma Way.
-
Set your own schedule: Decide class dates/times and propose pricing. Classes can be held any day of the week, and you'll have a key to the shop for classes that extend past shop hours.
-
Manage class listings & marketing: Update our Shopify site, upload photos, and schedule promotions via email, social media, and in-store materials.
-
Keep the classroom ready: Purchase and organize materials within budget (using Fernseed’s tax-exempt status). Tidy and set up the studio space before each class and clean up afterward.
-
Experiment & grow: Develop private/corporate class packages, test new formats, and gather attendee feedback.
-
Track results: Report on attendance, sales, and trends to refine the program.
Who You Are
-
Enthusiastic about hosting and teaching small groups—whether you’re a subject matter expert or confident learning and leading something new, you love to lead people in a project and have experience teaching in small class settings.
-
Skilled in floral design and/or botanical crafts.
-
Tech-savvy with Shopify (or similar CMS) and email marketing platforms (Klaviyo, Mailchimp).
-
Strong photography skills for marketing content.
-
Organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
-
Excited to experiment, re-use materials creatively, and deliver memorable experiences.
Compensation & Terms
-
$100 base per class + 10% of total ticket sales(Class capacity depends on material volume but is typically 8-10 attendees)
-
Paid within 7 days after each class.
-
You’ll work as an independent contractor (1099)—you set your schedule, decide how to get the work done, and are responsible for your own taxes.
-
Fernseed provides classroom space, marketing channels, and access to wholesale-priced materials.
Why You’ll Love This Role
-
Creative freedom: Pitch and teach classes you’re passionate about.
-
Flexible schedule: Choose when and how often you work (minimum 4 classes/month).
-
Shared success: The more your classes sell, the more you earn.
-
Brand support: You’ll have Fernseed’s marketing reach and a loyal audience behind you.
