Botanical Hammer Printing: Hand-Dyed Tote Bags, Thursday, October 8
6-8 pm
A relaxed, hands-on session for anyone curious about natural dye techniques, plant-based color, or slow-craft process work.
Pigment from fresh blooms, released with a few good strikes and pressed straight into the fabric — this technique (sometimes called tataki-zome, or "hammering dye") has been used for centuries to capture botanicals in cloth. In this workshop, you'll get hands-on with the process and leave with a finished piece and the skills to repeat it at home.
What you'll learn: We'll cover the fundamentals for getting a print that actually lasts and looks crisp — how to scour and mordant your fabric, which flowers and leaves hold color best, and how to arrange and manipulate your botanicals for sharp, well-defined shapes rather than muddy ones.
You'll leave with:
- A finished, hand-printed cotton tote (pretreated for you)
- A take-home guide covering the process and troubleshooting tips, so you can repeat this with flowers from your own garden
- A pretreated cotton bandana to take home, so your first at-home project is ready to go
