From Tartaruga Studio's "The Suns" collection, this one-of-a-kind wall hanging is made from 100% raw wool and hand dyed with natural dyes. This piece, Sun No.4, is dyed with madder root, avocado seeds, and chokeberry. Hand woven in Poland in the kilim technique.
Wool used for production was obtained from live sheep bred in the vicinity of the mountainous village of Koniaków. Each piece is tagged and signed by the designer and weaver.
by Tartaruga Studio
Owners and designers Wiktoria Nowak and Jadzia Lenart live and work in Łódź, Poland, a city with strong ties to the textile industry. Tartaruga Studio is an outlet for their passion for weaving with traditional tools and techniques, or as they call it, slow design("tartaruga" means "turtle"). Tartaruga's designs were recently designated "must haves" by the Lodz International Design Festival.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Each weaving in the Suns collection is a unique design, however, each contains a "sun," meant to symbolize or commemorate a moment or relationship with an important person in your life. The hand dyes have a tendency to fade or change shade over time, but as the artists point out, this means the kilim can slowly grow together with its owner and accompany them throughout their life.
