Wreath information

Local sourcing information

Fernseed is a member of the Slow Flowers movement, an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of the global floral industry, spearheaded by Pacific Northwest-based florist and author Debra Prinzing. This means the shop is committed to sourcing 60-90% of its floral product from farms within 400 miles of the shop. Wreath ingredients are sourced primarily from farms in Washington, with supplemental ingredients from farms in Oregon. Some ingredients are sourced hyper-locally, from micro growers and florists with backyard plots in Tacoma.

What the wreaths are made of

  • Each wreath contains a custom mix of greens including Western redcedar, Western hemlock, Western juniper, White pine, blue spruce, Douglas fir, eucalyptus, cypress, ferns, lichen branches, holly, dogwood branches, magnolia, salal, snow berries, bay laurel, and more.

Wreath dimensions and other product details

  • Finished wreaths come in two sizes: 20-inch diameter and 24-inch diameter. Each wreath comes with a printed set of care instructions to help customers achieve the longest shelf life for their fresh wreaths.

Nationwide shipping information

  • Fernseed wreaths are available for nationwide shipping to all 50 states and meet all state-level agricultural requirements for interstate shipping. Each wreath is carefully packed in a 2-day shipper and includes care instructions and a custom holiday greeting card. Because the shop does not offer doorstep delivery to Seattle, the shop recommends Seattle and other regional customers outside of their doorstep delivery range select the nationwide shipping option for delivery within Washington.

Local delivery information

  • Wreaths are available for doorstep delivery and can even be ordered for same-day or next-day delivery, depending on availability. Fernseed doorstep delivery zones include Tacoma, Dash Point, Gig Harbor, Federal Way, Fife, Puyallup, Spanaway, Steilacoom, Lakewood, and Parkland. A full list of delivery zip codes is available via a zip code validators at the Fernseed checkout. If an address is not available for local delivery, customers can elect to have a wreath shipped.

Collaboration with Arcady Goods

  • The Fernseed is collaborating with Tacoma-based stationer and paper goods company Arcady Goods on a series of custom designed, hand-printed holiday greeting cards to be included with each wreath order. Images of the cards are available in the Fernseed wreath press kit image bundle. Jonathan David Post, owner of Arcady Goods, uses sustainable materials in all of the company's printed paper products. All paper is sourced from a Michigan-based paper manufacturer, and Arcady donates a portion of each order to the nonprofit One Tree Planted.

How to order Fernseed wreaths

  • Fernseed begins taking wreath pre-orders via the website or by phone starting in October (exact October date TBD). At that time, the Fernseed website will contain home page links and navigation to the holiday wreath collection. Wreaths will begin shipping the first week of November, and will be available for purchase in-store and on the website through the end of December. All customers have the option of selecting either their ship date or local delivery date. Customers looking to order mulitple wreaths for client gifts and corporate orders are encouraged to contact the team at sales@thefernseed.com, or to use the bulk purchase contact form on Fernseed's website to begin a bulk purchase. Bulk discounts apply for orders of 10 or more wreaths. Customers can also visit either of Fernseed's retail locations in Tacoma (2703 N. Proctor and 5243 South Tacoma Way) to purchase a wreath from the in-store availability or place an order for shipping or delivery. Customers can also call the Fernseed South Tacoma location to place orders by phone (253) 302-3788.

About Fernseed

  • The Fernseed is a plant and flower shop with two locations in Tacoma, Washington. The shop opened in 2019 with its first location in Proctor, specializing in handmade ceramics and indoor plants. In 2020 the shop expanded to a second location on South Tacoma Way that fresh cut flower arrangements, a stem bar where customers can purchase flowers by the stem, and daily floral delivery. In 2021, Fernseed launched its wedding and event florals program as well as monthly floral subscriptions. The shop employs 4 full-time staff and several part-time employees, and is owned by Chicago transplant Katherine Raz.

Fernseed is a committed member of the Slow Flowers movement, and sources 60-90% of its floral product from farms and growers within 400 miles of its retail locations. Fernseed does not incorporate plastics or harmful floral foam in any of its floral arrangements.

The name Fernseed is based on a medieval legend that the seed of the fern would grant its finder special powers or invisibility. Ferns don't actually grow from seeds.
